Guide for Authors

Submission of a paper to Egyptian Family Medicine Journal (EFMJ) implies that it is not being submitted for publication elsewhere. Original papers written in English should be submitted electronically through the journal website (https://efmj.journals.ekb.eg/ ).

A letter of submission should accompany all contributions, signed by all of the authors, providing assurance that:

(1)    All of the authors have seen and approved the submitted manuscript, (copyright form)

(2)    All of the listed authors have participated actively in the study, and (author contribution form)

(3)    The manuscript is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. 

An Important Message to the author:

    • Articles will be sent for a similarity check, it will be rejected if the similarity index is 25% or more & won’t be considered afterward.
    • All communications and follow up of the article will be conducted through the site through the journal site.
    • The author is required to do all the reviewer comments and the revision of the article's final proof in order to be published. Any delay for more than one month in any step will lead to postponing of the article to the next issue. If any delay took place later the article will not be published and there will be no fee refund 

Preparing your manuscript

The manuscripts should be supplied in the following order: Title page, Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion (s), References, Appendix, Acknowledgments, and Arabic Summary. NB. Acknowledgments, Tables, Figures, Legends of Figures, photos, and legends of photos should be kept inappropriate site in the text.

The Title page:

The Title page should include:

1.1.    The title of the article

1.2.    A running title of no more than 40 characters

1.3.    The name(s) of the author(s) [First name, middle initial and last name]

1.4.    If the manuscript is prepared from MSc/MD thesis; the candidate (principal researcher) must be the first author.

1.5.    The affiliation(s) and address (es) of the author(s)

1.6.    Indicate the corresponding author considering the e-mail address, telephone, and fax numbers.

1.7.    Number of tables and figures

Abstract:

A structured abstract of a maximum of 250 words divided into the following sections: Background, Objectives, Methods, Results, Conclusions, and Keywords.

Keywords:

Three to five words should be typed separately under the abstract and should not be taken from the title. They should be arranged alphabetically.

Background

The Background section should explain the background to the study and the objectives of the study.

Methods

The methods section should include: Research design, Study setting, Study time, Study population, tools of the study, data management and ethical consideration.

Results

Comments on all tables and figures must be written sequentially in one section.

Discussion

This section should discuss the implications of the findings and justification are clearly addressed with highlighting limitations of the study.

Conclusions

This provide an explanation of the importance and relevance of the study reported.

Declarations

All manuscripts must contain the following sections under the heading 'Declarations':

9.1.    Competing interests

9.2.    Funding

9.3.    Acknowledgements

References:

All references mentioned in the references' list are cited in the text, and vice versa. References in references' list: Numeric and following the journal style. Not exceeding 30 reference.

Arabic Summary:

A structured abstract of maximum 250 words. Arabic summary should include the following:

11.1.Arabic title

11.2.Authors names and affiliations

11.3.Brief translation of the introduction, objectives, and research question(s)

11.4.Brief clear description of the method, results, Conclusion, Recommendations

General formatting guidelines

Quick points:

  1. Use Times New Roman
  2. Use font size 12
  3. Use one and half space
  4. Include page numbering in the middle of the bottom of the page
  5. Numbers, abbreviations, units and drug names:
  6. Numbers should be written as Arabic numerals (1,2, 3.), except at the beginning of a sentence where they should be written in words.
  7. Only standard abbreviations should be used, and it should be preceded by the word it stands for the first time it appears in the text.
  8. All measurements should be expressed in conventional units.
  9. System international (SI) units may be given in parentheses if required. Generic names of drugs should always be used.
  10. File formats: file formats are acceptable for the main manuscript document: Microsoft word (DOC, DOCX)
  11. Title should be concise (Maximum 15 words)
  12. Restrict the number of figures/tables to minimum; conventionally one table or figure is allowed per 500-600 words
  13. Articles are usually between 2000- 2500 words in length.
  14. Tables and figures to be inserted after the references.
  15. All authors to be listed on the site as well as on the title page

Style and language

  1. Uniformly American English
  2. Write the full term for each abbreviation at its first use in the title, abstract, keywords and text separately unless it is a standard unit of measure.
  3. Check the manuscript for spelling, grammar and punctuation errors
  4. If a brand name is cited, supply the manufacturer's name and address (city and state/country).
  5. Species names should be in italics

References:

  1. References in text: Numeric with round brackets and superscript after full stop and a comma
  2. Restrict the number of references to about 30 for the length of the manuscript 2500 words.
  3. They should accord with the system used in uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals, and additional statements (Can Med J 1997; 156: 270-7 and 571-4). They should be numbered consecutively by Arabic numeral (1, 2, 3..etc) in the order in which they are cited in the text. Numbers are to be written superscript enclosed in round parentheses. They should be listed numerically in the reference list at the end of text with journal titles abbreviated in the style of Index Medicus. All the authors are to be listed when 6 or less, if more than 6 authors use et al after the first 6 authors.

 Tables:

  1. Tables should be provided after the references
  2. It should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numeral (1, 2, 3. etc.) with the table number and title above the table and explanatory notes below the table.
  3. Title and explanation of the tables should be included in the body of the text.

 Figures, illustrations, and photos:

  1. Figures should be numbered in the order they are first mentioned in the text and submitted after the references.
  2. Figure legends written separately.
  3. Line drawings (including graphs) should be drawn in black ink on white paper.
  4. Lettering should be large enough to permit photographic reduction.
  5. Photographs must be of good quality, submitted as black and white prints, and have as much contrast as possible. data will be presented by the most suitable methods

 Copyright:

Authors who publish in Egyptian Family Medicine Journal (EFMJ) will retain the copyright of their work which enables the unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction of the article, provided that the original work is properly cited.

 Reviewing Process:

Manuscripts will be examined for consistency of formalities; those, which are inappropriate, will be returned immediately to the corresponding author with notes. Reviewing will start after technical modification phase that will take 2 weeks. Reviewing phase will be done by 2 peer reviewers and decision will be taken within 4 weeks of the start of reviewing. Decision will be accepted; accepted with minor changes; accepted with major changes; or rejected (according to the reviewer checklist). Galley proofs will be sent to the corresponding author and should be returned within 72 hrs. Alterations made in the galley proofs, other than the correction of printer's errors, will be charged to the authors.

 Page charges:

Articles will be charged 180 LE/computer page (font: 12-point Times New Roman, one and half-space) with a minimum of 10 computer pages.

Payments are to be delivered through:

(1)    Transaction via bank to the Bank Account of Family Medicine Journal.

(2)    Physically to the Egyptian family medicine association in the faculty of medicine, Menoufia University.

 The author will be requested to upload the transaction/payment receipt on the site to move to the next step.

 Referees:

The names, addresses, and e-mail addresses of two potential referees are to be provided with the manuscript. The editor retains the sole right to decide whether the suggested reviewers are used or not.

Submission Checklist:

Before sending an article to the Egyptian Family Medicine Journal, please ensure that the following items per this template are present in three different files:

First file: The Title page:

1.1.    The title of the article

1.2.    A running title of no more than 40 characters
